Yet another buzzword in the computer industry? Actually warchalking was a term once popular during depression when chalk marks in the wall were used to share information, on where to get food, which homes were friendly etc.
What is Warchalking now (when there is technically no depression in the world, except in a few people’s mind of course)?
The current generation (tries to) defines thus: “Warchalking is the practice of marking a series of symbols on sidewalks and walls to indicate nearby wireless access.”
With Wi-Fi becoming popular, people try to be good and share their wireless network with their community. How to tell people that you have the network and sharing it? And how to identify where a network is? Put the info on the wall! Simple enough.
The 3 simple symbols depicted in the image above are the ones designed by a web designer Matt Jones who thought it would be a good idea. Its becoming a global phenomenon, BBC says
Pretty interesting to see, simple & smart ideas can get you big names and fame around the world. Good Work Mr.Jones!
